Sylvania ZV450SL8 Dual DVD / VCR Recorder with Digital Tuner Review

This is a good unit for those who still want to use a cable TV connection and avoid using a digital tuner, as the tuner is built in and it has coax input and output. It also has a digital coax sound output, that works excellently for surround sound.

I had a unit previous to this but it developed problems with the DVD player, and I seldom used the VCR, though I still have a few old ones I haven't yet converted to DVD or replaced or discarded. The picture quality is much better on this unit and the DVD player is stable. The menus are fairly easy to negotiate and set up was mostly intuitive.

The only problem I have is that the remote is poorly designed. The most used buttons (play, pause, stop, fast forward, skip, etc.) should be separated somehow from the ones seldom used so that it is easy to play, stop, and so on. On this remote, however, the buttons are similarly sized and grouped awkwardly, and it's very easy to push the wrong button, especially if the room is somewhat darkened for movie viewing.

Perhaps I'll get a universal remote with better button management. Otherwise, this appears to be an excellent product, filling a niche need.

A large percentage of these contain home movies that were recorded with a camcorder in the hands of a family member trying to capture important moments in time and special memories. Even more of these tapes contain movies that people have purchased over the years. And no small number contain television programming that was recorded when VCRs first became popular. With all these VHS cassettes will lying around, many people still wonder why hire a VHS to DVD service?

The answer is that it is not necessary to hire a service to convert VHS to DVD. However, if the video on the VHS tape is of high sentimental value, it would probably make more sense to hire professionals to capture the video and save it to DVD to ensure the quality of the video. This is especially true with home movies that may have been of less than ideal quality to begin with.

Professionals who routinely transfer videos from VHS to DVD typically have software in place that allows them to manipulate the video and improve the quality. The main thing about this burner that distinguished it from the others was the ability to play VHS from the Component outputs. That feature is very handy for a pro-editor, like me, who wants to get the best image possible from the inferior VHS format. This feature also has allowed this deck, now that it has been retired, to be easily used by family members who aren't so tech-savvy (both DVD and VHS play from the same Component-Out, so there's no need to change inputs on the monitor).

Other than that, I have to agree with many of the others here. The 8x disk limit is a major sore spot for me, as well as the poor dependability of burned DVDs in general...

Why is VHS Disappearing

About 5 years ago a close friend warned me that I had better start transferring any home movies or prized VHS tapes that were more than 9 years old unto New VHS cartridges or better yet unto the new DVD discs before their 10 year shelf life expires. For a time some quick thinking entrepreneurs actually made a business out of charging customers to make the transfer for them. The fear of loosing my collection got me interested in investigating why I should or should not make the change.

VHS Tape Life

According to internet sources the average shelf life of VHS tapes is anywhere from 10 to 20 years depending on the quality of the tape material itself, the amount of usage, and the tapes storage environment. VHS tapes wear a little every time they're played, so the more they're played, the faster they wear out, not to mention the possibility of an uneven rewind, twists, and snaps. Excessive heat stretches the tape during a play cycle, and excessive cold makes the tape brittle. Not only are the tapes a weak point, the tape player itself wears out after just a few years of average regular use.

DVD Discs Have Longer Life Expectancy

The shelf life of the Pressed discs are expected to be longer than anyone in recent history has lived, this type of DVD which has superior image and sound quality, has a shelf life of up to 300 years.

Some Discs Last Longer Than Others

Among the DVD discs types there is also a difference in the life span. The erasable formats (DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW) are expected to last from 25 to 100 years. DVD-R and DVD+R discs are expected to last anywhere from 40 to 250 years, about as long as CD-R discs. Where as pressed discs (the kind that movies come on) are expected to last anywhere from 50 to 300 years. No matter which type of DVD Disc you're thinking of using keep in mind that their shelf life is a lot longer than that of your typical VCR tape.

Signs of the VHS's End

Another signal of the ending reign of the VCR tape happened on November 27, 2006, when the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) announced that commercial films will no longer be released on VHS. Electronic equipment manufacturers have been downsizing their VHS recorder lines. Both department stores and small electronic stores are also cutting down on the variety of VHS recorders they carry in-stock -- especially the higher-end systems such as S-VHS recorders.

With superior image and sound quality, longer shelf life, and compact size, DVDs have replaced VHS video as the format of choice for both consumers and business. With DVD players now available for less than the price of a VCR (under $50), and most video rental stores replacing their VHS tapes with DVD's, DVD is the perfect format for many business presentations, and Video rental businesses, some of whom are now using the mail to deliver their movies to the public. The cost of mailing several DVDs is Less than the cost of mailing several VCR tapes, and the chances of them being damaged by improper handling and Climate conditions are far less.

Is the End Near?

Coupled with all of these reasons for the decline in VHS tape usage is the movement to replace tape with more recent technologies, such as optical discs, hard disk drives and flash-based storage systems. Altogether, these technologies are shrinking VHS' marketshare.

Final Note to Fellow VHS Collectors

One day soon we may look around and find that VHS tapes and players will only be available at the flea market or antique store.
If we truly prize everything in our collections we had better move
Fast towards reformatting them, and getting a spare "use in emergency only" players.

You can make sure you don't miss your regiment with a run through downtown Madrid. The data from your GPS watch will be there.

These little devices can automatically and wirelessly download data to PC or web interface. Some give basic navigation with the ability to save waypoints. There are many out there with other goodies as well. I'm talking heart rate sensors, pacing, calorie counting, and of course monitoring your time. If you are wanting to buy a watch, I hope this has been helpful. It looks like another step in the right direction in the fitness world, again thanks to technology.

I've had this player for almost 5 years now, and it's been very good to me since I originally purchased it. It hasnt had any compatibility issues, and usually played without skipping.

As of last week or so, I began having problems with skipping on dvds. I presume I'll have to open it and manually clean the lens. After 5 years, I cant say I dont expect it to some degree. I'm not too worried, I think a simple cleaning will solve the issue.

I do recommend you buy this, it's a reasonably priced vcr/dvd player, looks nice, and works pretty well. Take good care of it and it should last years.

New Products and Technologies Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

While no one knows exactly what new technology will make jaws drop this year the way the iPhone did last year, one place to get a good idea was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, the 41st annual CES was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Sands Expo and Convention Center. The show has become somewhat of a juggernaut in the electronics industry - it's the largest tech trade show in the United States, with over 2,700 exhibitors and attendance of around 140,000 people. Many companies (large and small) use the CES to preview new products, make announcements and create buzz. In the past 40 years, the show has seen the debut of the VCR (1970), CD player (1981), HDTV (1998), Xbox (2001) and Blu-Ray (2003).

Along with more electronic inventions, gadgets and gizmos than you could fit into ten Best Buys (exhibit space is 1.8 million net square feet), the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show also offered appearances by celebrities like Michael Douglas, David Ortiz and XENA: Warrior Princess. Technology guru Bill Gates kicked off the electronic extravaganza, delivering his final keynote address as chairman of Microsoft and poking fun at his pending retirement in a video featuring guest spots by Al Gore, Jay-Z and Bono. In his speech, he painted a picture of the dawning "second digital decade" as a time when high-definition displays will surround us, touch screens and speech recognition will replace traditional keyboard/mouse interfaces and every device we own will be connected to the Internet.

Judging by many of the new products and technologies on display at the CES, Gates' predictions seem pretty accurate. Certainly the HDTV's were more prevalent than ever before. Panasonic awed onlookers with its 150-inch Lifescreen Plasma TV, the largest in the world, while LG introduced super-slim TVs only 1.7 inches thick. Meanwhile, Logitech worked to bridge the media gap with its diNovo MiniTM, a cordless, palm-sized keypad that connects TV with PC, and Eye-Fi won Yahoo's "Last Gadget Standing" contest for its memory card that wirelessly sends pictures from a digital camera to a computer. Beyond Gates' digital prophecy, other trends at the 2008 CES point to a future filled with global positioning system (GPS) technology and, of course, more automated products for everyday life.

Ideal for hunters and hikers, the SPOT Satellite Messenger takes GPS to the next level by enabling people to call for help from anywhere in the world (even places where cell phones won't work - i.e., deserts, mountains, the Arctic Circle). Tracking progress with Google Maps and sending basic messages are also available at the push of a button. For the wandering pet, there's the Zoombak Advanced GPS Dog Locator. The lightweight device attaches to a pet's collar and pinpoints the location of the animal on a full-sized Web map. Zoombak also has a voice-based service that provides directions to the GPS receiver's location. In addition to these gadgets, Nav N Go has invented new 3D Navigation Software, which brings GPS maps to three-dimensional life.

While GPS systems help people to find their way, automated cars may actually be taking them there. GM announced at CES that the company plans to test driverless car technology by 2015 and have cars on the road around 2018. Of course, the company still faces the difficult obstacle of convincing drivers to give up the wheel. Some other automated devices at the CES designed to make everyday living easier included iRobot's LoojTM, a gutter cleaning robot that can scour a 60-foot section of gutter in just 10 minutes, and Interactive Toy Concepts' RC Cooler, a radio-controlled, wheeled cooler than has a 30-foot range and can hold a six pack on ice.

Also of note at this year's CES was the increased presence of "green" products. Cell phones chargers, TV sets and laptop computers designed to reduce energy consumption illustrated the industry's contemporary focus on making electronic products more resource efficient. Even the CES itself invested in new initiatives this year to offset the carbon footprint of the large event.

Next year's Consumer Electronics Show is scheduled for January 8-11, 2009.

Have You Ever Had a Battery Leak in a TV-VCR Remote?

A battery leak in a flashlight is not too bad. You simply clean the contacts and all is well, but a battery leak in an electronic device usually spells doom for the device. The fluid that comes out of the battery is corrosive and will normally cause damage to the sensitive circuitry in an electronic device.

There is hope! Did you know that most battery company's actually Guarantee that their battery will not leak and damage your electronic device? The next time you buy a set of batteries, look on the package for a guarantee. If it does not have a guarantee, I would stay away from those batteries.

NOTE: I have only seen this type of guarantee on standard size Alkaline batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, and a few watch batteries. I'm not sure if re-chargeable batteries leak and I'm not sure if they offer this type of guarantee.

When batteries leak, if the item is not that expensive, most people will simply throw the item away and buy a new item, but what about bigger ticket items like a digital camera? Battery leaks are not covered by the camera warranty, and having someone clean the battery leak could void your camera warranty. This is the where battery guarantees come into play.

For example, I had an $80 dive light in which the batteries leaked. I thought this was really strange because I changed the batteries weekly. TIP: Never go night diving with old batteries. I sent the dive light to the battery company and I received a new light (newer model) and new batteries.

Example two, my friend had an old camera winder which was damaged by leaking batteries. We sent the winder to the company and in a few weeks the battery company sent a check to buy a new winder and of course new batteries.

The obvious drawback to the guarantee is you have to pay to ship your item to the company, and you will be without the item for a while (4-6 weeks). Also, it is the company's discretion to repair or replace the item. For me, it's a hassle to send the item to the battery company if a replacement can be purchased for less than $20.

Do's and Don'ts:
1. Do make sure the battery company offers a guarantee on their batteries and read the terms of the guarantee.
1. Don't mix and match batteries? This will increase your chances of experiencing a leak and this will void the guarantee.
2. Don't leave batteries in electronic devices for extended periods of time.
3. Don't expose electronic devices to excessive heat, as heat will cause a leak and possibly worse, an explosion.

Whenever possible, buy rechargeable batteries. They can be used over and over again, but they need to be used, and over time they will begin to lose their ability to hold a charge. Don't expect a rechargeable battery to hold a charge after sitting in your desk drawer for two months. You will be able to recharge the battery, but the charge will not last as long.

Don't throw that thing away just because the batteries leaked in it! Check if the battery company has a guarantee!

JVC HR-XVC1U DVD-VCR Combo Review

This is a nice combo DVD/VCR. I've had it for a couple of years now and have had no problems. That's really why I'm writing; I want to let people know the ones with problems are probably the exception rather than the rule.

The only disadvantages to this product for me:
1) On the VCR, you can't FF by time (a panasonic feature; FF a given number of minutes)

2) Once you set the VCR program, you must hit TIMER (not just power off) to get it to use the program. Okay, hitting TIMER will turn the power off, but let's say you want to record something later in the week. You will turn your deck on and off several times in that period. Do you want to hit TIMER every time? And by the way, hitting TIMER doesn't just turn the deck off, it switches to DVD mode. In theory, this is nice so you can still use your DVD player while recording a show. In practice you just end up turning off two things (VCR via TIMER, DVD via power) most of the time.

3) No S-video input. I had to buy a S-video to composite video adapter to record something from my PC video card. By the way, don't do this; the quality is pretty low.

Little advantages to this product for me:

1) Front panel inputs; I use this to dub from my video camera very often

2) Comprehensive remote; for me, the more buttons the better. I hate on-screen menus. How can I see what the picture looks like when I adjust the tracking if 88% of the screen is the tracking menu?

3) Many flavors of A/V OUTPUT: digital audio (coax and optical), composite video (of course), component video (nice for home theater), S video.

Bottom line: A good combo deck for the money.

Well, I had this machine for about a year now. Never ever had any technical problems with it. The only problem I had was my own mistake in disc selection. This machine excepts ONLY DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM. DO NOT TRY any dics with a + symbol, it won't work. Propriatory choices I suppose. In case of DVD-RAM I have nothing but the best to say. Yes they do cost a bit more money but they are good for 100,000 times re-recording.
Dubbing works fine, DVD recording quality is as good as your signal. It never failed to play a commercially recorded disc, and I make a lot of discs on my computer and everyone works like a hod damn LOL.
I guess like any new technology it takes a bit of practise and getting used to to make something work. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is the limitation in disc choice. There are ones out there excepting any format DVD and lets face it, computers have been excepting it for ages now, and DVD/RW is now dirt cheap. I hope this will help some folks out there decidng on the machine. The situation is way better with this one now, lot's of bargain prices out there.

I have over 70 VHS tapes to convert to DVD and searched for the best way to do it. I have now converted about 30 of them and i think that this machine is great. As with a lot of Japanese products, the instructions are a little complex but once you understand how, the duplication process is a snap. The quality is much better than the "through the computer" gadget that I tried before. It is also much simpler than the old JVC product that I tried a few years back. I would recommend the
Panasonic DMREZ48Vk in a flash.

Although I've only had the Magnavox Dual Deck DVD/VCR Recorder for a short time, I am impressed with the quality of this recorder. It takes a bit to understand the instructions - some procedures don't apply to every setup. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error but once you get it down, it's easy to use - both with direct recording and timer recording. Would suggest you set up the clock manually, otherwise it may not work properly in the timer mode - all depends on whether you have a local PBS station signal. I have yet to try the DVD to VCR direct recording and vice versa yet, but am looking forward to reducing the number of VSH tapes I have - some of which have already deteriorated. My suggestion is to be persistent and try different ways to record - it won't take long to get proficient at it. The play quality has been great. I would recommend this product, but if you are new to using one - find a friend who can help you through it. Be sure to "read" the instructions carefully - it will help.

Why Buy a Tivo DVR

I am writing this article from the view of someone who grew up without cable TV. We had 3 major networks and PBS plus a couple local UHF stations. In the late 1970's we finally got cable added to our street, needless to say this was a pretty big deal. It allowed us to view newcomers HBO, ESPN, and CNN. The next step was being able to record and view previously recorded movies so I went and purchased a VCR in 1980. I practically needed a forklift to get it to my car because of its size and along with that it was only a 2 head model plus the remote control wasn't wireless, it was hooked up by a cable. This was RCA's top of the line recorder at that time and cost $800.

I waited over 20 years for my next move up the technological scale and finally got a DVD player that would record television shows. The recording aspect of these machines never lived up to my expectations because of hardware problems, bad disc (which would stop recording in the middle of shows) or just plain difficulty of use. I was just never that pleased with the DVD recorders.

It was because of the dissatisfaction with the DVD recorder that I finally went online and bought a used cheap TIVO DVR. This turned out to be my best entertainment purchase since 1980.

I have been a subscriber to DirecTv for quite a few years and knew that I could hook a TIVO up with their system. Hooking the DVR up was as easy as setting up the old VCR. Satellite line in, output cable to the TV, and you're in business. Of course this is where the fun starts. You have a schedule menu that looks like the ones you have with your regular cable or dish setups listing all of the programs and their times. This feature is updated daily and run for about ten days in advance allowing you to program what you want to record that far ahead. If you have any of the movie stations you will find yourself programming movies starting at 2:20 a.m. 9 days down the road, forgetting about it and having it show up in your list guide waiting to be viewed.

I use a twin lnb receiver which allows me to record two different shows at once, but that's only half of it. While those two shows are recording I'm able to watch any of the shows that I've already recorded. Talk about efficiency, there is practically no wasted time spent in front of the television . Lets say you're a CSI fan and you have to go out for an appointment the night the show airs, and lets say it starts at 10:00 p.m. You get back from your appointment and it's only 10:15. What are you going to do now, wait until 11:00 to watch the show and get to bed late? Not with the TIVO. You can start watching the show at 10:15 from the very beginning. If you skip through the commercials during the show you will be will be finishing up during the normal time of 11:00 since commercials take up about 20 minutes per show. It's a great feature to have.

Another great feature is the list guide of all of the shows that you have already recorded. I don't know about you but I accumulate way too many tapes over the course of 25 years. I practically needed a storage shed to for them. With the list guide you just scroll down and pick what you want to watch. It is clean and simple. No more tapes strewn about the house, half of which were mislabeled, old, or just plain useless.

If you have a favorite actor, musician, sports team, or just about anything with a name you can have TIVO remember it. Lets say your a big Harrison Ford fan and you don't want to miss any of the movies he will be showing up in the future. All you do is type his name in your favorites section and Tivo will record anything with Harrison Ford in it forever, or until you remove him from your favorites list.

The number of shows you can store varies with the size of the hard drive on your TIVO DVR. I have a rather small one and am still able to store 100 hours. For me this is adequate. Some would prefer more and it's not a big deal to upgrade or you can just get a larger one with your initial purchase.

There are more features that make a TIVO dvr a good deal for your entertainment dollar, but I don't really have the time or space to go into it at this time. Your main benefit is that you won't be spending wasted hours in front of a television watching something that you have little interest in.. You don't have to go all out on your first purchase, try out a used one that can be found online. I have a lot at my store right now at http://dvd.bigredfb.com

I, like most people, have always been skeptical of "remanufactured" products. However, this one is definitely worth the price (and then some).
I was in need of another combo unit when the one I had died and I hadn't transferred all tapes to DVD. I didn't really want to spend that much for a unit, but the "remanufactured" option was within the budget.

I have to say that this was money well spent. Not only to do you get a quality 4-head VHS player/recorder, but you also get a stunningly-versatile DVD player/burner. With 6 months of life left in my old combo unit, the VHS tapes played back with lines through the screen; hardly a quality you want when transferring tapes to DVD. Some of the tapes weren't even played that much, and sure "tape" over time will continue to degrade, but you should still get a decent picture from a tape in good condition. The 4-head VHS player brought the quality of the tape back to life.
Perhaps the best feature I'm crazed about is the DVD chapter editing feature. Of course when you record a program, chapters will automatically be added per your selected setting options (every 5...10...15min) from the menu; however, prior to finalizing your disc, you can review the chapter markers and edit them as you choose (add, move to new location or remove completely); something my old unit didn't do.

Finally, when I purchased this item, shipping was slated for at least 5-7 business days since it was coming from a third-party distributor. I ordered it on 1/25, it was shipped on 1/26 and I received it on 1/27 -- SWEET!! The shipping time enabled me to receive the unit, set it up, review the features and had me recording and dubbing by the weekend.

Pioneer BDP-95FD Blu-Ray Disc Reviews For the Multi-Region Version

This player is amazing. It's clearly better than the first gen players, bdps1, even the bd91. there are a few little things to consider about blu ray. It SHOULDN'T play cds. if you have 1000 to spend on an Elite blu ray, then you should have good money, like 600 for a Cambridge azure or a like 24 bit cd player. blu ray lasers are very narrow, and will not read cds correctly, and to make them do so would be way more work than is considered worthwhile by the major manufacturers.

That being said, DROOL! best upscaling I have seen on any player to date, full streaming features, and the Pioneer Elite look. It's a really good player and I for one think that it's the best to date.

It plays CDs, as well as internally decodes advanced audio (minus DTS-HD Master) into PCM for transmission over HDMI or analog, for all the legacy receivers out there.

Very nice Blu Ray player though with many nice features. Loads like a computer not as fast as a regular player but no big deal. This model is much better than the last from this line. Picture and sound is so wonderful on a Pioneer Plasma TV.I also have the Elite VSX-91TXH amp to go with my system Great Work Pioneer but work on the prices ok.

According to the manual for the BDP-94FD, the connector diagram on page 11 shows 8 RCA connectors to support 7.1.

I doubt there will be any major physical changes between the BDP-94FD and the to-be-released BDP-95FD.

I don't claim any special expertise but my experience with Pioneer Elite has been my barometer. I bought a second DVD a couple of years back to support both DVD and SACD which my Denon did not. The Pioneer bested the Denon in both Picture Quality and musicality in my setup AND the Pioneer is still working, the Denon's motor went about 6 months ago. Sounds real simple to me...........

How very happy am I that I was a Pioneer Elite "Target"...The VSX-94 is beyond comprehension, when matched with the Bdp-95, life becomes absolutly, hilariously in harmony..that, and after it took two weeks complete a very effective hook up, I WAS AT ONE WITH ELITEZEN MANUALS....
I just picked up a Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD from the Pioneer Store in Costa Mesa.

I will keep this first post for answers to common questions so that new owners get answers quickly.

Does the Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD generate the DTS-HD Master Audio Bitstream that can be decoded by the receiver / processor?

-- Yes. My Integra DTC-9.8 displays 'DTS-HD MSTR' when I select DTS-HD Master Audio sound track from disk. Audio is un-frig'in-believable!

Are the load times improved over the 94HD?

-- Using POTC: COTBP as a benchmark, it took 22 seconds from pressing START on the remote to the POTC "loading..." message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear

How does the PQ of the 95FD compare to the 94HD?

-- Very similar - 95FD just slightly sharper

How well does the 1080p24fps work:

-- Flawlessly

How is good is the DVD SD upconversion on the BDP-95FD?

-- Excellent (better than the BDP-94HD and the HD1)

I have been watching Kingdom of Heaven Blu Ray while listening to the DTS-HD MA sound track (Integra displays DTS-HD MSTR :-) Sounds un-frig'in-believable.

Player seems to be operating flawlessly. Boot up time very acceptable. Responds to remote immediately. It is difficult to tell if there are any PQ differences from the PS3 that I had but the DTS-HD MA is mind blowing...

It just took 35 seconds from pushing the close button on the remote to Kingdom of Heaven to begin playing...

With Disk in DVD player and player on stop, using POTC: COTBP it took 22 seconds for the POTC loading message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear...

After setting it up I can't help feeling déjà vu all over again. As you can see in the pic it does look nearly identical to the 94HD and HD1. I do like the class look it has though. I really like that high gloss piano finish look. As Tony said it takes about 35 seconds for titles to start playing. Which actually is a pretty BIG improvement over the two older models. Just like the others initial set up is a breeze. I do like the Pioneer start up screen better on the 95FD. It just looks cooler. I am not only comparing this unit to its brothers (or cousins) but also to the Samsung 1400. This ELITE unit costs more but you feel like it is money well spent.

Once again I love having the resolution button on the remote. Being able to change it on the fly is so much nicer then having to stop the movie and go into the set up menu (like the 1400 and HD DVD players). If there is one feature other manufacturers could learn from Pioneer that would be a good one to start with. Also, having 1080p/23.98 (24) done without issues is a breath of fresh air. Toshiba has been struggling as many of us know so it is nice to get a unit out of the box (just like the 1400, 94HD and HD1) that can do 1080p/23.98 without any EDID issues. I have not spent a great amount of time with this unit but from what I have I can say it is THE best Blu ray player on the market.

The picture Q is very colorful and very sharp. It bests the very impressive (especially for its price) Samsung 1400. Not by a lot in terms of pic Q but when you add the entire package together you know why the Pioneer is more. Picture settings, menu options, great remote (which is light years ahead of the competition) and of course a great picture with great sound. Speaking of sound I have only done a couple of comparisons so far but it is too easy to select bitstream passing in the menu. No confusion here. You are either sending D.D. or DTS via HDMI or PCM... Your call. That easy. I will do more on audio soon but sending the audio to my receiver (Onkyo 905) sounded great just as I expected. It also sounded good the few minutes I had the 95FD doing it. I am not going to say which is better because I do not want to open that can of worms again. So do not ask here. PM me.

I am using the new Sony VPL- VW60 "Black Pearl" (which is the 3rd pic) for all of my comparison so far. It handles 1080p/23.98 like a champ. I can also send it straight into my crystalio II and then tweak the image before sending it to the VW60 in 1080p/23.98. The Pioneer 95FD gets along with all of my other components which I do not take for granted these days.

And yes I am making reference to the XA2 and A35 which are stubborn when it comes to sending 1080p/24 to some displays. In direct comparison to the 94HD the 95FD is obviously a more flexible unit with a little quicker load times. Being able to pass HBR audio directly to the receiver for decoding is a really cool feature. Especially if you purchased one of the newer ones that can decode it. The picture Q is very close. I keep going back and forth. Going straight to my pj it does look like the 95FD is just a little more sharper but their brilliant colors are nearly identical. I will say the home media gallery looks more refined on the 95FD. I have never really got into that feature before but now I am intrigued so I may just jump in!

Bottom line is if you have the 94HD and do not care about the bitstream audio feature then there is absolutely no reason to dump it for the 95FD. However, if you do not and are interested in getting the best Blu ray unit in terms of features and pic/sound Q then look no further than the 95FD! I hate to keep picking the new Pioneer units as my favorite Blu ray unit but honestly the other companies are still two steps behind. The 95FD is the starter in my set up. More to come (SD DVD versus the A35 and XA2 and even 1400) as well as a few more thoughts on audio...BTW, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (BR) is looking and sounding awesome on this unit! Pick up a copy!

Well, I am pleasantly surprised to post that the 95FD has excellent upconversion. Much better than the 94HD and HD1. I even put it through the HQV Blu ray benchmark tests and it handled them very good. Especially my favorite stadium torture test! And as tradition lately it even made my adult videos look great! It is right on par with the A35 and XA2. I will work harder tomorrow and do real side by side comparisons (1400 included) but my first initial impressions are very good to excellent... Have you compared a 5.1 PCM track coming out of the PS3 vs. 95? I know there should not be a noticeable difference, but if you would not mind doing a comparison I would be curious to know for sure.

It is not surprising that DTS-MA sounds better from the 95 as we are getting the full signal vs. only the 1.5 core of the PS3. Can't wait to hear this!
The DTS-HD hi res is from the King Of New York's DTS HD soundtrack (I am reviewing) and the DTS-HD MASTER is from the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer soundtrack which states it is DTS-HD MASTER...

As I posted earlier in this thread the 1400 is very close but the 95FD produces a sharper image. I also prefer it for SD DVD upconversion. I also prefer all the other cool features like the resolution button on the remote. It is much nicer being able to change resolutions on the fly then having to hit stop and go into a set up menu. Especially when you are trying to compare them! I have spent awhile this afternoon playing different blu ray discs but tomorrow I will do my comparisons between the XA2 for SD DVD upconversion. I predict the 95FD will be on par with the XA2. We need to find out which chip it is using because it is by far much better than the 94HD and HD1... More to come tomorrow...

If the 95 can match the XA2 on SD upscaling this is a tremendous plus. The XA2 makes new DVDs almost look like HD and the only players so far that can do the same job are the very Hi-end Denon's or players costing 5 times more. The Samsung 1200 has the same Reon chip and should also be great but lacks the new audio features. Depending on your tests I will be a new 95 owner soon.

I have the bdp-95fd and the pdp-6010fd display. Extremely happy with it. Firmware support has been excellent. I am using it with a TacT 2.2x digital preamp, TacT digital Boz amp, Escalante Pinyons and a pair of Escalante subs. My connection is through the coax digital output. I have had an signature upgraded Denon 3930 in my system using the same set-up and I must say the sound quality and bass impact blows me away on the bpd-95fd In stock form, the Pioneer bpd-95fd is an excellent performer in terms of audio and video.

Given my system can only process two channel audio through the digital output, am I getting the two channel version decoded Dolby Digital Plus?

Setup

Connecting the cables is relatively straightforward using the enclosed diagram. The first time I set it up, I couldn't get the electronic programme guide to work (probably because of a poor TV signal in my area), although I learned to live with it as I was still able to pre-programme recordings. When I moved house, setup went as described, so I must presume that my first negative experience was a glitch. The EPG works well now and is always up to date.

The DVDR-80 can record from two external receivers (satellite set-top boxes, to you and me). UK users beware, though: not all makes of satellite receiver appear in the setup process.

Recording There are several recording modes. These range from M8 (the manufacturers describe this as video quality, though I think it's better than any recording on my best VCR), giving you eight hours' recording time on a 4.7GB DVD-R or DVD-RW disc to M1, which gives you an hour of ultra-high quality DVD. The average home user will be very happy with M6, giving you 6 hours of better-than-VCR quality.

Programming a recording is straightforward, using either Guideplus, Videoplus, manual programming or safe record. The Guideplus recording works well; but you'll need to pay attention to the end times. Unlike the Videoplus, Guideplus doesn't seem to pick up the programme start and end signals, so you could end up missing something important, like finding out whodunit in a murder mystery, for example. Unfortunately the recorder doesn't auto select a blank area when you've programmed a recording; you'll have to do that yourself or you may find you've overwritten something you really want to keep. The safe record function is also a mixed blessing. This works by pressing and holding the record button on the remote, at which point it defaults to the end of your disc - fine if you've got a three hour slot at the end. If you haven't you may find that you've only managed to capture 10 minutes of that vital programme.

With programmes you've recorded through Videoplus or manual programming, it's easy to go into the disc menu and rename it to something you'll remember. Pressing the numbers on the remote when in this mode provide a shortcut to certain letters.

Playback When the recorder comes on - there's usually a slight delay - the on screen menu shows all the programmes on the disc.(This is exactly the same when loading the discs on your PC) Just use the up and down arrows on the remote to find the one you want, press OK and it loads. Fast forward and rewind buttons work well, though watch out for anything over 8 speed as you can find you've reached the end of the programme quite quickly. The chapter forward and back buttons tend to do about 6 minutes at a time, the default chapter setting.

Quality Sound quality on playback is excellent at all recording settings, with no distortion at high volumes when played back through my hifi. Picture quality varies depending on the setting used, though even on M8 colours are crisp and clear. Fast motion tends to blur on the lower settings, though, so sports fans may want to record the big game on M2 or M1.

Other features The monitor button on the remote control lets you switch between the disc and the TV tuner. This is especially useful when recording from an external set top box (such as a satellite receiver) as it allows you to check that you're recording what you think you are.

The disc manager (another button on the remote control) is a key feature. You can add discs to the disc manager (I have named mine 'disc' and the number) and then it stores information about all the recordings as they are made. You can then browse this list by title or by disc. Selecting a recording in this mode brings up a message telling you which disc to insert to play your chosen recording.

The disc menu stores an image of your programme as well as the date and length of recording. Typically, this is an image from the first few seconds of recording, so if the image showing is from an ad, you might want to change it for one relating to the programme. You can do this with favourite scene select tool on the remote control. This tool also allows you to divide up recordings (in case, for example, you left it running and have recorded several programmes) and to change chapters.

Annoyances The most irritating feature is a tendency to freeze from time to time. I still haven't figured out what sets this off, but pressing buttons repeatedly once it's gone does NOT help. The only solution at that point is to pull the power cable out and start again. Don't worry, that doesn't mean starting the setup process again. It's simply a reboot and then back to normal

I was also not happy that it didn't integrate as promised with my Philips Freeview box. However, I have learned to live without that.

Summary In spite of my gripes, I've never regretted buying this recorder. Apart from the minor annoyances, the only useful addition would be a hard disk as well, and Philips has another model with this feature.

This product is exactly what I was looking for. A Blu-Ray Player that also can play All-region DVD's. The sound and video quality are excellent. I haven't yet tried all the extra available features, I bought this mainly for watching Blu-Ray DVD'S as well as my international DVD's. The lights on front of the unit are bright though. To me, it's well worth it to pay the extra amount for this version of this JVC product plus remember it includes the free HDMI cable which is approximately a .00 value in itself. I got mine from All Region World (Amazon seller). Be careful, other sellers may be advertising this product as an all-region player but are selling the North American version instead, see the other reviews. I am very pleased with my purchase from All Region World. Although mine arrived without the HDMI cable as advertised, All Region World was quick to send me one after I contacted them about it.
If you do not need an all-region player than the slightly lower costing product of the same JVC model is probably going to be ideal for you. I don't understand why JVC didn't market the two different versions with separate model numbers, very strange in this regard.

I purchased this unit to copy old home-recorded video cassettes, some of which were 25+ years old. I was concerned that the tapes would become unplayable and I would lose the programing/films that were stored on them (films that were never released on DVD and entire broadcasts of Superbowls and World Series, etc.) I even stumbled on a press conference in March 2003 where George Bush clearly states that we had invaded Iraq because of WMD's- so much for Dick Cheney's revision of history...

This remanufactured unit came in very good condition with no visible evidence of wear or abuse and performed its functions as advertised. The manual is well-written and will aid the user in getting up and running in very little time with a little study. The only two issues I had with this DVD recorder were: 1.I had trouble getting some of my video cassettes to track properly on the VCR of this unit. Since these recordings were made on up to 10 different VCR's, this is not too surprising. (I simply used a separate stand-alone VCR as my playback source for the recordings to get around this problem). 2. The recording quality of the 4 and 6 hour modes is pretty poor. One of this unit's nice features is the 2.5 hour recording mode which is perfect for recording films which run longer than 2 hours without having to step down to the 3 or 4 hour modes. Remember that 6 hr video cassettes have a very limited resolution and that they will not produce high quality digital re-recordings in any recording mode on ANY DVD recorder. The DVD's recorded on this machine tend to look much better on an older CRT television than on a digital display.
For the price I paid, this unit is quite good and serves the purpose for which it was purchased.

I didn't need the TV tuner so it's nice they have a cheaper model that doesn't include it. One very cool aspect is the HDMI output. Once I get the proper equipment, I'll be able to capture high quality material through this connection. Until then, however, I'm having to run through a camcorder to get the video into the computer. That's where the one major downside of this deck for me comes in. There is a DV In port on the front which is great, but it's only an In port. It can't output through that port. You have to play your VHS tape for a few minutes and work with the two tracking buttons on the front of the machine until you're sure all the static lines are gone. Then push rewind to go back to the start of the tape without pressing stop (if you do, the tracking will be messed up again). Then pause the tape and insert your DVD-R (DVD+R's work too, although the instruction manual doesn't mention them), choose the DVD record speed (the 120-minute SP mode provides good results) and press the DUBBING button. After the recording's done, you need to use the setup menu and finalize the disc so it can be played on a standard DVD player.

I'm not sure why a previous reviewer had so much trouble, but I found that recording from DVD to VHS was not difficult at all. It does require a few steps to make sure you have the settings you want but you shouldn't have to change them after that unless you change you mind about how to record things. The one thing you probably do need to do every times besides hitting dub is to pick the recording quality which effects the amount of time you DVD can record for, but that can be done with one button on the remote very quickly.

Recording from the TV was trivially easy- like recording to a VCR.

Recording from a video camera (not using fireware- the old fashioned way) was not difficult, though it required a manual consult to figure out how to change the DVD input channel.

My main complaint is sometimes it's not intuitive which menus and button functions will only work in certain modes. For example, you can't change the DVD recording quality in VHS mode (I understand that makes some sense, but in an interface a one-use button shouldn't really change behavior, only multi-function buttons). Also, you can only pull up the menu to manually finalize the disc if you start playing the movie, it doesn't work if you have it in the title screen. This seems like sloppy user interface testing.

Still, if you want to dub VHS to DVD or record tv to DVD I would definitely say this will do the job. The DIVX capabalities are also a big plus in my book.

The tuner is excellent! This recorder outperformed my standalone QAM tuner (which only pulled in about 25% of the available channels). It might even be better than my Sharp TV's QAM tuner. I don't think it missed a single channel. Futhermore, it automatically skipped any encrypted channels, saving me the trouble of manually deleting a ton of empty channels.

I connected the recorder using HDMI cables. The picture quality is very sharp and very clear. HD channels are downsampled to 720x480, even when just viewing them (ie not recording). They still look great, but they are not HD. It would have been nice if the HD channels were not downsampled when connected via HDMI, but it's understandable. The analog channels of course do not look as good as the digital channels, but they look as clear as they ever have. It's just that the digital channels look that much better!

I have so far only tested HQ mode, and the record quality was exceptional. I recorded an episode of "House" from FOX (HD 16x9 720p). I was pleased to discover the unit records widescreen material anamorphic instead of letterboxed. In HQ, the audio was ac3 256kbps 2-channel. I believe the audio was downmixed to 2-channel (from 5.1), but it sounded great nonetheless.

I had my TV aspect set as "16x9 wide" in the recorder's settings. I noticed that if I set it as "4x3 pan and scan" it crops the left and right edges of widescreen channels. If I set it as "4x3 letterbox" it letterboxes the widescreen channels. I would assume that any recordings would be the same, but I have not tested that.

I recorded onto Maxell DVD-RW discs. I was very happy to see that RW discs work just fine. After finalizing the disc, it played well in any other player in the house, including the PS3. An un-finalized disc only plays in the recorder.

The menu takes a little getting used to, but it's actually quite well designed. I only have a few complaints. I'd prefer "Timer record" to be at the top, or even accessible via a single button on the remote (perhaps it is. I haven't read the manual yet). And I'd like quicker access to finalizing a disc. But overall, it's well done.

The remote is fairly well layed out. It is way better than the remotes that came with the Philips recorders and players. And the "eye" sees the remote from anywhere in the room. There are still some buttons I don't know what they do, but again, I haven't read the manual yet.

Had my set for 3 days now. Super easy set up. All the features work great. Quick formating after record. Good quality image and the sound seems better than my old dvd recorder.
Only ONE DRAWBACK which is: you can NOT record 'nothing' having a copyright including old VCR movie tapes, tv movies, not even old black and white movies if the tv channel broadcasts a copyright signal on their station.
But if you want to copy VCR tapes you made yourself, it works great. If you want to tape a tv movie that is not protected, the quality is super.

The JVC DR-MV80B is a tunerless DVD / VCR Recorder that just does the job well, and as good as you would've expected, compared to hooking up a VCR or DVD recorder with a tuner. The job does just as good of a job. All you have to do is set it up easily with traditional Audio / Video cables to the back of your recorder, and easily connect it to the back of your cable box or converter box, with a simple connection. Next, check and make sure that your TV has a input connection for video components. Switch to that after turning it on, and you can simply watch whatever you record on your TV with ease.

The setup also here is much more universal than other DVD recorders, as you can record and playback your DVD's in +RW or -RW formats discs as well as the rarely recognized DVD-RAM discs. The JVC DRMV80B also does the job well at recording in both the widely used Video format, as well as the more advanced VR format or otherwise known as the RW Compatable format. The recorder does a great job at helping you edit out all those annoying commercials, and setup your favorite shows on DVD so you can have extra room to record more shows. It also does a good job at dubbing your shows from DVD to VCR cassette, and from VCR to DVD with ease. There is one big disadvantage though, the timer-link mode here where you can setup recording your favorite shows, is a lot more complicated than it was setup in the instruction book. Thankfully, it is much easier to use the regular timer recording option instead, which doesn't complicate the owner.

All in all, despite one or two issues the JVC DR-MV80B isn't as complicated to setup, and honestly works just as well as you would've expected with all the other recorders with the NTSC or ATSC tuners. It is a affordable recorder that does the work well, and is one of the easiest recorders to operate on the market. While DVD / VCR Recorders aren't being recognized as much, they still are great to own, and JVC does the job well at making ones that are worth the money. I absolutely recommend this for anyone who wants a DVD Recorder that is advanced that also is easy to use.

I wanted to update my Emerson(Funai) EWR20V4 VCR/DVD Recorder because that is 4+ years old and VHS units will disappear in a couple of years, just as LP's, 8 Track and Sony Beta vcr's have gone. I had no problems with the Emerson and the Magnavox is the SAME maker, I figured it is a safe bet. Now that I have used the Magnavox for two months without a problem I can say that it is a good unit to buy. Wal-Mart had it for 9-how could you go wrong?(barring a lemon) I have an old TV and since this has a digital tuner I did not have to buy a converter to receive the new TV signal. I use this to watch the over the air channels using a rabbit ear antenna. Since I accidentally let time pass and could not use the Gov't coupon card, I would have spent + for the converter box anyway. The picture quality is fair/good. Now, the important stuff- Use the Recommended Disc's only! It is Very picky on the disc recording manufacturer. Also,once a Movie, TV Show or personal Cam-Cord recording is copied-this unit will Force you to name the Next recording number/segment. It always assumes that there is space for another recording. Before and once Finalized,the menu will display an -unused/non-titled- segment. As odd as that sounds, I called their customer service people and they told me the same. That is the only real pain in the butt problem I found with this product. If not for that and based on the cost I would have assigned a 5 star rating.

This is my second purchase of a Visteon XV101 portable DVD player. It was a gift to my 9 year old grandson. He loves playing videos and likes to repeat the same 5 or 10 seconds of certain scenes of a DVD over and over. He is not overly gentle with the unit but it has continued to perform perfectly regardless.
